Guns, Germs & Steel

Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared M. Diamond

The first couple chapters are the most interesting; after that I found the book pretty redundant.

The Fastest 1000 Pages You'll Ever Read

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson

Did I love this book or hate it? After completing it, I'm still not sure. Parts of the book were a heck of a lot of fun. It certainly wasn't boring, and the scope of time and place was exhilerating. But reading the book was a lot like MTV videos -- the camera never stays put long enough for you to really get a good look at the scene or musician. The book zooms all over the place, going on tangents left and right. And maybe that's part of the beauty of the book, maybe I'm asking too much for it to be nicely wrapped up and all of the story lines cleanly completed.
In the end, I recommend Cryptonomicon; if for no other reason than just the fun use of language by Stephenson.
